Have Delays Affected Brazil’s Coffee Export Performance?

Tempo de Leitura: 2 minutos

Coffee exports play a major role in the strength of Brazil’s trade balance.

Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of coffee, reaching countries on every continent and spreading the aroma and flavor of one of the most popular beverages on the planet.

You might not know this, but according to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world – second only to water.

Though this beloved fruit traces its origins back to Ethiopia (Africa), it was the Arabs who embraced the habit and began serving kahwah to visitors as a way of offering a warm welcome and making guests feel at home.

In this post, we’ll take a look at Brazil’s coffee export performance and the recent delays caused by issues at our ports. Read on for the full picture!

Losses Caused by Coffee Export Delays

Unfortunately, delays in Brazil’s coffee exports have led to real losses.

These setbacks were caused by logistical challenges at Brazilian ports, where dozens of ships saw last-minute changes to their schedules.

Moreover, there’s a pressing need for investment in:

  • improving port infrastructure,
  • and increasing dredging capacity to accommodate larger vessels.

Due to the current situation, nearly 5,000 containers were delayed from being shipped, representing over 1.6 million 60-kilo bags of coffee.

According to ElloX Digital, 66% of vessels in 2024 faced delays or schedule changes at Brazilian ports, directly impacting coffee exports.

This disruption led to a loss of BRL 2.726 billion in foreign exchange revenue in the first 11 months of 2024, along with additional costs from storage, detentions, pre-stacking, and early gate openings.

Industry Resilience and Performance Results

Despite the export hurdles faced in Brazil, 2024 still closed with impressive numbers.

According to the Brazilian Foreign Trade Association (AEB), coffee exports in 2024 reached a new record, with 50.4 million bags shipped to 116 countries, a 28.5% increase over the previous year.

In financial terms, the export value reached US$12.5 billion, representing a 55.4% jump from 2023 – yet another record broken.

This strong performance is thanks in part to key markets that continue to value our product, such as:

  • United States,
